A Look At Games On The Mac

By Mathew Jonathally

In the nineties, looking for a game that can be played on a Mac led only to disappointment generally because there really were not much gaming titles available for the platform back then. Although Apple has become known for the modern design and the straightforward operation of their different computer offerings, the inability or difficulty to use third-party hardware and limited customization opportunities made building games for it relatively difficult.

Apple's insular thinking to computer development has also discouraged many gaming enthusiasts from purchasing a Mac. One other reason why Macs really were not viewed as a great gaming platform is that it was only in the first five years of the 21st century when Apple chose to replace their PowerPC processors with Intel-based ones and introduced multiple button support for mice and standalone graphic cards which have long been regarded as de facto standards for Windows-based computers since the gaming industry boom in the Nineties.

Macs have been regarded as generally superior at graphics, creating animation, and editing assorted media in comparison to Windows-based computers , so many consumers felt that it was such a pity that it didn't rival the latter in terms of gaming. The good news is that Apple has been opening up to the exciting world of video gaming. Case in point, the company has provided Boot Camp with their OSX 10.4 Tiger release that made it possible for people to partition their computers and use a Windows OS and thus enjoy the best of both worlds - the intuitiveness of a Mac that is able to run Windows-based games

The introduction of Steam service, which brought an incredible repository of gaming titles for Mac, has also raised the appeal of Mac computer as a gaming system. Some game designers are also going with this change and have designed games that run natively on Mac. There are also games traditionally only playable on PCs that are ported to Mac through third-party porting houses which include MacPlay.

Nowadays, one could already play Mac flight simulators which in the past were only enjoyed by PC owners. The main benefit of playing these simulator games is that they offer people an chance to try a thing they otherwise do not have the resources to try out in the real world, like flying a plane or operating a race car. Similar to those playable on Windows-based PCs, these simulator games offer a selection of missions with primary and secondary aims.

Brick and mortar retail shops still allot a small shelf space for for games and related apps for Mac computers though because Mac gaming is not yet as prevalent. That in mind, if you want to find flight simulators for Macs, your best bet would be to search and buy from online stores through Steam and other niche websites that offer games at no cost or for a fee.
