After Two Decades, Finally We Can All Play Sonic Games Online

By Simon Smith

Games are fun for all of us, but for some reason a majority of either grow grumpy as we get older, or we grow jealous at the lack of time to indulge ourselves. It seems that the number of so called experts condemning a game is inversely proportional to the success of the game. With that as the lead in argument, it is no surprise that the non players find it more than annoying when a friend begins to play Sonic games online, entering the Sega world of the hedgehog and disappear for extended periods of time.

With all the severe games which include weaponry and raw brutal violence it is hard to imagine anything as pedestrian as a hedgehog could do anything any harm. But just try to sit down and fire up the hedgehog and see what happens. If you are a child, you will suddenly find there are over 30 chores you have not completed, some of which you have never heard before. If you are an adult, suddenly this is exactly the time for a conversation or some other task that must be handled.

It has been two decades since our hero appeared to us in the world of Sega, and he was immediately beloved by all. His development was somewhat interesting in its own right, with necessity its driving force. Sega was lead into a fierce competition with Nintendo, thus needed a character for its games that could provide a challenge to the Mario character Nintendo was successfully developing.

With a wide variety of contestants in the running, the field was narrowed to a final two; an armadillo and a hedgehog. Obviously, the hedgehog won out and the rest, as they say, is a very storied and successful history. But even after he was selected as the winner, there would be much controversy over his appearance.

With Nintendo doing well in Japan, spreading across Europe and penetrating the United States market, the hedgehog needed to appeal to many different types of audiences. The original version of the character had him in a band composed of animals, and his girlfriend was a sensual blond girl. These were problematic issues for the marketing team handling North America. It was their US counterparts thought process to tone down the girlfriend and lose the band.

The creators in Japan were not pleased in any way and did not want to allow the changes to be made. After the North American team came to Japan and explained the cultural problems, they finally relented. It was a good decision, as the new version of the hedgehog with his spiked hair and power sneakers was welcomed with open arms.

The story line behind the game pits a hedgehog with the capability of moving faster than the speed of sound against an evil Doctor. The Doctor is kidnapping the animals and turning them into evil Robots with designs to take over the world. Only a spirited sprite like our speedster had the ability to thwart him and his evil plan.

Created to provide competition to the global phenomenon from Nintendo, Mario, the character had quite a challenge ahead of him. Yet from his initial appearance he was destined for stardom, and has competed successfully with the plumber for more than a decade. Eventually these two competitors were placed in juxtaposition and competed literally with one another. The flexibility provided by playing sonic games online means no one knows where this friendly strife will lead.

Find Available Sonic Games Online

By Simon Smith

Sonic Colors has taken the speedy blue hero out from the depths of mediocrity and given it a new boost of life. Before this, most new instalment were met with near derision by a fanbase that seemed to crave the magic of the classic 2D games. This has led to some fans putting their own Sonic games online.

Sonic Ultimate Flash by Dennis Gid is among the most popular of these online projects. The aim here seems to have been to match the magic of the classic 2D series from the early nineties, and alongside those, some of the more recent ones, such as the Advance series. This game is made in flash and is rather simple, but does serve its purpose in creating that sense of nostalgia. One of the first things that does this is the first level, Leaf Forest. It is in keeping with the trend of 2D games to begin with a palm tree beach level, something that started with Green Hill Zone from the very first game on the Sega Genesis.

Green Hill Zone and similar levels in later instalments, such as Emerald Hill Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, are known for being colourful and easy enough for any new player to get accustomed to the game. There is ample opportunity to utilise the speediness of the main character without getting him killed in the process. Leaf Forest follows this pattern, exactly.

Leaf Forest is a pleasingly bright and green introduction to a suitably nostalgic game, and it is easy to explore and difficult to die, with an emphasis on playing with speed. If you are not familiar with Sega, this is a good way to become used to the game, although this particular fan project seems to be designed for those who are already fans of the old games.

The levels progress in a way that continues this, although it becomes apparent that the game mirrors Sonic Advance 2 more that it does the games from the early nineties. This is not ever such a problem since the Advance series in themselves are a call back to those early games. The music is taken from both the Advance games and the Classic games, giving the game a familiar soundtrack alongside those trademark noises that we have come to expect.

Four characters are available to play, and these are the hedgehog, himself, as well as Tails, Knuckles and Cream, and there are two more that can be unlocked. The former two play as you would expect them to, but Cheese, the chao sidekick of Cream, lacks his game breaking powers and Knuckles does not glide or climb. Other than that, though, it is probably as close to an authentic Sega game as you are going to find, online.

A popular thing to do with fan games is the idea of combining one well-known franchise with another. The hedgehog is no stranger to this, and the combination of Mario and he must be one of the most frequent. In Sonic Lost In Mario World, he is placed in, of course, the world of Mario. He is now fighting koopas and goombas instead of animal-powered robots and egg-shaped scientist, and is collecting coins instead of rings. It is a simple concept, but a significant one, especially since the speediness still works within the confine of traditional Mario-style platforming.

There are other cross-overs, such as with Pacman and Final Fantasy, but it is worth bearing in mind that these only have anything to do with the hedgehog and his friends in terms of aesthetics. These are just a couple of examples, but due to the work of fans, it is possible to play good Sonic games online.

By Russell Strider

When used in a proper and tactical manner, World of Warcraft shamans are often really valuable characters. Even so, remember that if you ever drop a totem, you can never pick it up, so be careful with them. Learning the potion-preparing skills is also an important part of your profession as a shaman. Having the correct abilities will help you win money and acclaim.
