Years ago as you grew up you used to be either into hand held gaming devices, PCs or games consoles and the market was split that way. The split in the market does not seem to be as evident anymore because of the fact that many households will make all three options available for their children as they grow up.
So for the game developers this can only be a good thing because of the fact that more markets can be exploited and more customers will be had.
There are though, still a small minority of people that will not play a game on a hand held console because they feel that they can't get enough of an 'experience' from the small screen, with inferior sound and fiddly buttons. The reality is that there is no way you can get the same experience with a hand held device as you would sitting in front of a fifty inch screen with your surround sound on.
Of course that's not to say that you can't get addicted to the games that are especially made in scaled downed versions for devices like the DSi and 3DS. The hand held industry have been creating addictive games and exploiting this since the early eighties; you may remember games like Donkey Kong in particular.
There have been some really successful games that have made the move to the bigger screens and have done really well on these platforms as well. When you think about games like the Mario Bros series, you will see that this has also been hugely successful on every platform that it has been played on. It doesn't work out quite the same when games go in the other direction though.
Titles that have broken all records on the games consoles of today have largely passed without comment in the world of the hand held machines. If you are playing games like Call of Duty and Halo on the games console then you won't want to play it on a hand held device.
