If you were asking people about awards ceremonies and which ones they had heard about, the majority of people would probably tell you about the Oscars which are the awards to recognise the work of those in the acting industry over a twelve month period. There are though some pretty big game of the year awards held every year and the software houses and developers are all fighting for their own bit of recognition and appreciation.
The only difference between the game of the year awards and the Oscars and is that you are unlikely to see a red carpet or a tuxedo and there will be considerably less tearful speeches.
In actual fact, these gaming awards are not normally held at a top venue but are rather voted on by those who actually read the computer or video gaming press. Another way that games are voted on is through the games manager GameSpy or Steam which are desktop favourites for the PC. This is a good way of deciding because it means that those who have voted are the ones who are actually playing the games.
The big winners in 2010 were Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2 which will come as a surprise to all those that were addicted to the Call of Duty Series for much of the time that voting took place. One of the names in contention this year is Mass Effect 3 according to those who use the GameSpot forum.
This forum tends to be one of the ones that will measure how hot a game is. However there are more categories to think about than just RPGs which is what Mass Effect 3 is.
For many that are in to their football games the old debate is coming back as to which is better, Pro Evolution or Fifa. In September we will see the new versions of each of these games being released and then time will tell on which one people prefer but it should be close.
