First it was killing mob after mob until the player stood under a pile of bodies, and that was called a Horde level guide. Mindless but at least a player knew where they were going and what they were doing. However, when BC was released questing became the way to level and Horde level guides which heretofore been strictly about where to find the best mobs to kill at each level became guides about where to find the quest givers, where to find the mobs to kill and finally where to turn it in. Today it is dungeons they seem to be one of the faster ways to level and although the groups are not always bad, it is still not ideal, let me explain.
Instancing to level is almost as boring as killing mobs forever to level and it leaves a player without some essential tools. The random dungeon finder will grab the character up, toss them in the dungeon with a group of strangers. The problem is the person may not even know where the dungeons are at. Imagine being level 80 and having no flight paths, none to Everlook, no flightpath to Sholazar or to do Argent Crusades dailies. It's a pretty chilling thought.
Level guides have not stood still however and they will provide some things that instancing can't. For instance doing the quests in an area will leave a player with a significant amount of gold as well as all the flight paths and plenty of faction reputation. Level guides will give the players all the benefits listed as well as some nice drop blues. Using a horde guide in conjunction with instancing every few levels can help a player reach 80 fast and leave them with the gold to buy their epic mount as well as the gear to play that character well.
