Variations Of The Battlestar Galactica Story

By Willard Y. Wuckert

People all over the world have embraced the characters, worlds, and stories of the Battlestar Galactica franchise. The novels, comic books, and video games that are currently being produced using the BGS moniker owe their existence to the original television series which was aired back in 1978. Fans in many parts of the world are enjoying these different adaptations and extensions of the original story and characters because it allows them a chance to truly experience the world of Galactica. Even though the roles and details of certain characters have changed throughout the variations of the main storyline, the essence of each character has been maintained and fans have received each of the new stories quite well.

Glen Larson was the mind making both the original series that ran for one season in 1978 as well as the brief sequel released in 1980 which contained a few of the original characters. The story sticks to a small group of humans who are trying to avoid destruction by the powerful and unyielding Cylon race. Although the show was taken off the air after just one season, it earned a cult following amongst many fans who even protested the cancellation outside of the television studio that broadcasted the show.

A new version of the original television series was made starting in 2003 with a three hour miniseries and continuing as a weekly show from 2004 to 2009. The series was updated and adjusted according to the ideas of the producers; this included some significant changes to certain characters from the original show. The characters' stories could be much more developed in this series because it lasted for several seasons.

After the Battlestar Galactica series was finished in 2009, work began on spin off projects that would continue to expand on the characters and themes made popular in the TV show. The TV show Caprica was a prequel to BGS and helped viewers get a clearer idea of the events which triggered the storyline beginning in the first episode in 2004.

The Battlestar Galactica franchise has fans in all parts of the world who are ready to enjoy more adventures with the memorable characters of the series. Video game fans who also appreciate the series can enjoy online games that enable you to interact with the popular characters while enjoying a well-designed MMO game.
