The newly formed partnership between, Hasbro, and the creative forces behind the popular Facebook game, FarmVille, has breathed new life into four children's games. The pairing, which was announced last February, has also resulted in the creation of two home versions of Zyngas hugely popular Words with Friends. Both versions of Words with Friends, and the updated versions of Hasbro card games, Memory, Old Maid and Go Fish, along with Hungry Hungry Hippos, all of which now feature FarmVille characters, hit stores in October.
A virtual farming game in the spirit of Harvest Moon, a video game series that was created in Japan, FarmVille was once the most popular game on Facebook. It was originally released in 2009. Its popularity spawned the release of a sequel last September.
Played for free on Facebook, or with a paid upgrade, the game is similar to China's now all but forgotten, farm simulation game Happy Farm. The game features a virtual farming world in which the players are would be farmers who must accomplish the day to day actions necessary to manage their imaginary farms. The list of daily chores covers things like taking care of animals and livestock, to plowing fields, and growing and harvesting the crops.
The classic Hungry Hungry Hippos game has been renamed to Hungry Hungry Herd, and features some of Zynga's familiar virtual farm faces; The different colored hippos have been replaced with animals more suiting a barnyard. There is a pig, a horse, a cow, and a sheep. The plain white marbles have been replaced by four colors, each representing the specific favorite food of one of the animals. The game includes fifty dollars in farm cash for parents to use in the on-line FarmVille, and retails for a little over twenty dollars
The newly branded FarmVille Animal Game featuring Memory, comes with a Disco Dancing Sheep where the cards, that now feature favorites from the on-line game, are kept. The game is still played in the same way, except that players can now also win by matching baby animals with the corresponding animal parent. The cost is reasonable at about ten dollars, and parent receive a gift of twenty dollars farm cash to be spent on-line.
Hasbro's Old Maid game has also undergone a transformation. The cards now feature the familiar faces found in the on-line version of the game and are accompanied by a Rockstar Cow pouch. Retailing at just below ten dollars, the game also comes with 20 farm cash for use by parents
The pouch for the newly designated FarmVille Animal Go Fish game is in the shape of a chicken. Just like the updated versions of Old Maid and the Memory game, its cards have also undergone a total transformation. It also comes with an on-line farm cash incentive, and is priced at less than ten dollars.
This collaboration between the virtual and traditional gaming worlds has also produced games for the eight to thirteen and thirteen and above market. The release of the play it at home version of Draw Something and the CityVille inspired, CityVille Monopoly and CityVille Skies, brings the partnerships new game total to eight in all. All include either FarmVille farm cash or complimentary codes for other Zynga created worlds.
