How To Get Into The World Of Video Games

By Steve Brian

From a four year old practicing their alphabet to a Marine sharpening his shooting skills, video games are an integral and beneficial part of our world today. Whatever you happen to be using video games for, the following article will help you kick it up a notch and get the most bang for your gaming buck.

If you are purchasing a game as a gift, look at the back of the package and read what it says. Particularly if the game is for a child, look for anything that you think could indicate questionable material. There should also be a few pictures that give you some idea of what you are getting as well.

Form a game-swapping group. You may not need to even look farther than your own group of friends to find a group of people who have the kinds of games you are interested in playing. With a game-swapping group, you can get rid of your old games and get new ones for free. What's not to like!

If you are having trouble finding older PC games, or even running them on current operating systems, try searching for online stores that offer downloadable titles. Stores such as Steam or GoG offer a wide range of older PC games that have been patched and updated to run on modern Windows and Mac operating systems. These games in these stores are priced at a fraction of their original cost, making them an affordable gaming option.

Don't be afraid to play a game on "Easy" mode the first time around. You are supposed to enjoy the experience of playing, not suffer through it. If the game is any good, you may want to replay it later on anyway. Don't feel bullied by games that tease you for choosing "Easy," either--return them!

Parents should take the time to look in the game console's settings for parental controls. Consoles will have these controls within their settings menus. These can allow you to control games by ESRB rating, the amount of time on the system and limit online access. With these controls set, your child can play games more safely.

If you are concerned with anyone in your home doing too much sedentary video gaming time, get them to include more active video gaming hours. Hardware and titles now exist where video gamers can play various sports, dance, practice balance and agility and even strength train. These all make for good activity on rainy or dark days.

If you love games, but don't have a ton of money, you may want to look into computer gaming as opposed to consoles. While the initial investment may be a bit higher, there are lots of ways to save money on PC games, especially when bought by direct download.

There is a type of game within the industry that is looked down upon and which only the least knowledgeable customers purchase known as shovelware. These are games which are cheaply produced and have low quality, but are marketed to the masses of non-gamers who own consoles. Avoid these games!

A good video game should have solid graphics with colors and a sharp image quality. It can be hard to know what a video game looks like without playing it first. This makes it imperative that you look at the product's box for help. Check out the information on the back of the game's box to make an informed decision. Most video games have a few small pictures to help you see what the image quality is like.

Even though everyone says that practice makes perfect, it does not mean that you have to do it all day long. As with everything that you do in life, you also need time to just step away and regroup. So play for a bit and then just step away and take a break.

If you have a little one into gaming, make sure they are learning social skills in real life, before online. The virtual world may be okay to make friends on once a child has developed sufficient social skills, but if they learn online first you could be compromising their ability to get on in the real world later.

Customize your controls. Most games have advanced settings that let you alter how the game is controlled. Use these to your advantage. There is nothing that says you must play with the game's default settings. For example if you have become accustomed to jumping with one button and attacking with another, and your new game uses the opposite - change it!

Bad video games are a bane upon the gaming culture, but they can be avoided. When you know what to look for, poorly produced video games will fade out of existence. The advice provided gives a clear outline of what to watch out for when playing video games and how to avoid the bad ones.
