The Top Feature of Star Wars: The Old Republic

By Vincent Schwart

SWTOR has become a very popular game since it first came out. Many people flocked to the new MMO because of the immense following the movie has had throughout the decades. However, there is much more behind the game than the franchise history that it incorporates very well. Unlike most games, this one has added many things people like and do not like. One of the best features is companions. This is equivalent to a helper that follows you around and listens to your every commands. Quests and missions are much easier when properly utilizing a companion.

The game starts off right before the great war. Players are prompted to choose where their allegiance lies and have a slew of customization options to choose from. This is a very important part for new players because you will be progressing on one side of the fight. People who are just starting out should research both sides before picking a definite class. However, you are allowed to have more than one character so your options are endless. After the game begins, you will traverse through missions and hopefully pick a reliable companion.

Five different companions may accompany you at one given time. This allows you to use their own special traits for your own benefit. Players who hate soloing through games will find that this is a refreshing feature that helps you complete quests and missions much faster. Using them properly involves delegating their tasks appropriately. This means that you would want to fight against your foes or do a mission while they are off doing a boring task for you. This is especially good for professions because you can fight in one area and have your companions gather materials to level up your skills. It is such a good addition that can really change the MMO genre forever. When you get your ship, you are only allowed one companion to follow you. This should be given much thought because each one has their own benefits.

Leveling in SWTOR is a lot more fun than most games. This is mostly because your companion adds a great side game to the main story. Affection is a system that the developers integrated that tells you how faithful your companion is on your journey. This is very important because when they are unhappy they do not want to stay around. Sure, they will give you time to correct your flaws, but they can turn against you if they do not feel wanted.

Making them happy is admittedly pretty easy to do. If you make the right decisions during your missions you will gain their respect. If for some reason they are unhappy, you can always give them a gift to show them you appreciation them.

There are 5 different levels for pets and 5 ranks of gifts. These directly correlate with one another as low level gifts given to a high level companion are more of a snub than a good thing. It is vital that you show them your appreciation by giving them a gift that is equivalent to their level. You risk losing them as a companion if you do not keep them happy.
