December of 2011 was an exciting time for the MMO community. SWTOR came onto the scene and quickly signed up over one million people. This made it the fastest growing game in the genre's history. However, there are people that believe this game is no different than any other MMORPG on the market. They believe that the game's enormous popularity came from the movie and don't understand the hype behind it. PC gamers have truly adopted their game as one of the years favorites and there are a lot of reasons for doing so.
The SWTOR storyline is set thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader or any of the other famous Star Wars film characters. The Republic and the Empire have just signed an agreement called the Treaty of Coruscant which has brought about peace between the two groups. Given the groups history, peace is not something that would last very long. Hostility is beginning to rise between the two yet again and it is only a matter of time before the treaty is broken. War is certainly on the horizon.
The game starts in the middle of the conflict where players must decide their loyalty. This is no easy task as the war is just beginning. A person needs to decide who they want to pledge their allegiance to and fight till the death. The Sith Empire and Republic have two advanced classes and four major classes to choose from. The Republic has the glory of the Jedi, while the Imperial are known for the overpowering Sith.
As mentioned before, each one of these main classes has two specialized, or advanced, classes within. You won't be able to choose your specialization until level 10. In general, these advanced classes are much more powerful and they come with unique abilities. In order to make the right choice, you'll need to think about your play style and what role you'd like to play while in groups or fighting solo. Some classes are strictly defensive while others are predominantly offensive or even stealth. The class that you choose will affect how you play the game and also how the story progresses.
SWTOR has quite a few different things for players to do while progressing through levels. You can follow the standard quest line, participate in flashpoints (often called dungeons or raids in MMOs), and even PvP (player versus player) battles. No matter what you choose to do in the game, each one will require a different strategy and play style. Throughout the leveling process, players will gain new armor pieces, weapons and plenty of other useful items. Around level 16, players receive their own spaceship in which they can travel around the galaxy and participate in space combat missions.
Star Wars: The Old Republic is an overall solid game. It has all of the major aspects that have come to be expected from MMORPGs and has gained a lot of attention from the industry. It may only be a matter of time before the game reaches the top spot and surpasses other popular MMO games.
