From The Sixties To Today - How Online Games Changed

By Doss Aarodviss

Contrary to the commonly held belief that online gaming came into existence only in the 1990s, it has actually been around since the 1960s. The growth of online games paralleled the growth of networking technologies. When they were first introduced, online games were limited to text-based interactions and simple graphics but as network technologies became more complex, multimedia games have become widely available as well.

The earliest network games were made by computer scientists and their students. They used the Arpanet and PLATO networks, which many believe are the precursors of the modern Internet. Multiplayer games of the seventies, like Air Fight and Star Trek, were already supported by these networks.

Commercial online games considerably increased in number with the arrival of the World Wide Web in the 90s. Doom, Quake, and War Craft were the most popular games in that decade. With the increasing availability of high-speed, low-cost Internet, and powerful gaming consoles and computers, modern online gaming came into existence. In the latter part of nineties, massively multiplayer online games were introduced and have since grew into a major business that attracts many developers globally. Today, social networking websites have become another platform where people can play games, effectively transforming many in the non-gaming population into avid gamers.

One kind of online game that remains very popular these days is racing online games. This gaming genre is considered one of the staples of the computer gaming world, and many of the earliest computer games were part of this genre. Racing online games usually put the player in the driver's seat of a high-performance car and the objective of the gamer is to beat himself or other drivers. With breakthroughs in computer, gaming console, and Internet technologies, playing racing games online have become a favorite pastime for many people.

Our inherent love for cars and our need for speed are at the core of the popularity and longevity of these kinds of games. They make us experience, albeit virtually, how it is to own, drive, and modify our dream cars. The racing games we have today endeavor to give a much more realistic experience. For example, there are games which will give a visual representation of how it would look like if you sped up. Recent game titles even have physics engines which bring about handling issues whenever you crash your car. There is also a number of racing online games, so getting one made for your level of skill is easy. Racing games are extremely fun to play because your actions and choices can really affect the outcome of the game. You will also see changes in the game as you become more skillful, which makes it even more engaging. Whether you're young or old, playing online racing games will be worth your while.
