The upward thrust of Nintendo to the pinnacle of video game consoles is a massive jump from its little beginnings in Japan as a company that made playing cards. Back in 1951 the name for Nintendo was officially the Nintendo Karuta Company, Limited, and their income stream was principally the playing cards. The company became number one in Japan to make playing cards out of plastic.
The president of the company at this time was Hiroshi Yamauchi and after he made a trip to the United States in 1956 to see how playing cards were made in the U.S, he realized that the market for the cards was limited and he decided to follow other business decisions for Nintendo while still selling playing cards. The move away from playing cards started around 1963 when Nintendo branched out into a motel chain, a food company, a toy company, and a taxi firm.
Not one of the new ventures were big successes for Nintendo excepting the toy company. One of the first successes for Nintendo in the toy business was the toy called the Ultra Hand that was released in 1970. The majority of the new toys created by Nintendo were electronic and were more technically advanced than other toys at this time. Other popular toys included Love Tester, Ten Bn. Barrel, and Ultra Machine.
Nintendo took large strides electronically with the release of the Nintendo Beam Gun Game that was the precursor to the NES Zapper. This led on to further expansion of games concerning video and their first real computer game success which was when they got the rights to distribute the game Magnavox Odyssey in Japan.
In the 1970's Nintendo started developing their own video games and from here the company saw the probabilities of the video game market. In 1975 EVR Race was released for the arcade market and was reasonably popular. That success was continued with other games like Donkey Kong and Radar Scope.
In 1983 Nintendo released the video game Mario Bros. Which was a big hitthat was followed by Super Mario Bros.
There had been also the release of Nintendo's own cartridge-based Nintendo game console called Famicom. The name and design was changed in 1985 to Nintendo Entertainment Platform (NES). There was also a move into making a compact game machine called Game Boy that became the fastest selling compact game machine ever.
Nintendo added to its success with releases of Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3 together with otherpopular games. The company moved on to be on the cutting edge of advanced technology for its video games. The release of their new console, Wii, in 2006 opened up the company for further domination in the video gaming market.
