Virtual Reality Computer Games

By Richard Hollins

Back in the early nineties there were many virtual reality computer games in local shopping centres and they were tipped to be the next big thing. Unfortunately they didn't take off despite most of the games placing you in the pilot's seat of a jet fighter.

The problem with them was that you had to wear a helmet that weighed a tonne and the gloves that you see these days that act as control devices just didn't exist or at least the games to use them in didn't. In fact that may have been why the machines which cost a fortune to have a go on failed.

The technology wasn't great and the graphics definitely not good but that would have all been forgiven if the games they made were great. If there had just been one game that became infectious then we would probably all be playing these games in our homes today.

The virtual reality computer game made a resurgence back in 2007 thanks to companies like Icuiti which brought out a new improved version of the helmet which became a pair of glasses that were not heavy and could be worn easily.

This new headset was known as the iWear VR920 game controller and it allowed you to become a part of the game; it could be used with role playing games which were already very popular so it became the first of the next generation virtual reality games.

There have been many manufacturers that have done the same thing with a headset/glasses design that gives the impression of being inside a game. What really helps is a set of 3D surround sound earphones and you can really escape from reality for a few hours without ever having to leave your home.
