WoW Rogue Guide - Lurking, Leather-Clad Death

By James Stighton

The rogue class in World of Warcraft is an intriguing damage-dealing class based around Stealth and poisons, as well as a unique set of utilities. Rogues have some of the highest damage potential of all the melee classes, but are fairly fragile to balance this fact, with leather armor being the heaviest they can wear. Rogues can be built as a backstabbing lurker in the shadows who can launch a devastating sneak attack against enemies, or as a sword-wielding swashbuckler, depending on the talent spec you choose. This WoW rogue guide provides details of all three talent specializations and their uses.

Rogues are damage dealers, pure and simple. Their role in any dungeon or battleground is DPS (damage per second), and they have absolutely no healing or tanking ability at all. They rely on surprise attacks for some of their highest damage potential, and must often use Vanish to escape if they cannot kill foes quickly, since most specs are ill-suited to a long, drawn-out brawl.

Rogues bring utility beyond damage to the groups they accompany, however. In PvE dungeons and raiding situations, their Sap ability can be used for limited crowd control, though many creatures are immune to it. Sapping one opponent of a vulnerable type will lower the odds a bit and is often the prelude to clearing a group of trash mobs. Lockpicking can give access to some areas as well as opening chests or lockboxes gained along the way, and, as WoW rogue guides note, has been improved.

The utility of rogues in PvP is higher than in PvE, due to the nature of the what is needed to win. Skulking near a flag spawn to seize the flag and dash away with Sprint is a tactic made possible only by rogue or druid Stealth. Rogues can also Sap key enemy characters, lie in wait for flag carriers even in the midst of a hostile base, or seize unattended nodes in Arathi Basin. This WoW rogue guide believes they can also make good guards and good scouts in many battleground situations.

Combat spec is the most frequent leveling spec for the rogue class, recommended by most WoW rogue guides, including this one. Combat rogues usually make use of swords, axes, or even maces, and have a much more swashbuckling approach than the other specs. They are fairly tough by rogue standards, meaning that they are able to stand toe to toe with creatures during questing and fight them with a hope of winning even if they do not remove most of the creature's health in the first second or two.

Combat rogues should be equipped with swords, axes, or other high-damage weaponry instead of daggers, which waste much of the spec's potential. The slower these are, the better, due to the mechanics of how the spec deals damage.

Subtlety rogues are a damage-dealing spec best suited to PvP, thanks to their extremely high damage spike due to Ambush and the talents which enhance it. Subtlety rogues must wield two daggers in order to be effective and use their talents to any effect, and have many skills which tend to "front load" their damage. The usual technique is to use Premeditation to add two Combo Points to an opponent, Shadowstep behind them, Ambush them (adding three more Combo Points) and immediately make a 5-point Eviscerate, which is enough to kill lower-health foes almost instantly.

Assassination rogues are focused on poisons and use of the Mutilate signature move, a high damage attack which requires the rogue to use two daggers. This WoW rogue guide notes that it has the highest PvE damage potential, and is therefore the endgame raider's rogue spec of choice. Poisons must be used carefully to maximize this effect, and Assassination even has a viable AoE poison attack when specced properly.
