This WoW warlock guide will attempt to communicate to you all you'll need to understand to get started playing as a warlock. Warlocks are well known for their shadow magic and fire magic spells and particularly for the ability to summon and command demonic minions. Casting unholy spells of pain and suffering are a warlock's bread and butter. They can cause incredible spell damage from afar but are almost never in the thick of things because of their poor armor rating.
Several talents require the utilization of soul shards, which a warlock has to obtain from slaying enemies. The warlock is one of the fastest characters to level and truly shines when playing solo. When raiding with a party, warlocks often do massive amounts of damage and should take care not to draw aggro off of the main tank.
The only races allowed to become warlocks are Blood Elves, Humans, Undead, Gnomes, and Orcs. The single kind of armor a warlock may wear is of the cloth variety. They can only use daggers, staves, swords and wands as weapons.
There are several demonic minions a warlock can summon including the Imp, Voidwalker, Succubus, Felhunter, Infernal, Doomguard, and Felguard. Each minion has unique advantages that can be exploited.
Warlocks primarily use DoT's (damage over time) and DD (direct damage) spells, but they also possess some specialty spells which can be useful including conjuring Soul Stones. They are even able to conjure up some useful items and perform resurrections on dead friends by expending soul shards. They're able to self heal using life tap or drain life, and also have several crowd control spells (CC's) such as fear and howl of terror. Since warlocks can acquire mounts via quests, they save bucket loads of gold that the other classes have to spend.
The Affliction talent tree uses talents that are designed to bolster a warlock's drains, curses, and DoT's. This spec works best for farming, boss killing, and raiding. This spec is arguably the best spec for leveling quickly.
The Demonology talent tree is geared toward summoning more effective demons and enhancing your conjuration spells. The Demonology spec is particularly good for player versus player and overall survivability. It is also good when leveling, though it's not really as good as Affliction. You'll be extremely dependant on your demon pets when using this spec.
Destruction talents focus on enhancing your fire and shadow spells and making your warlock a powerful direct damage dealer. For Destruction, it is all about high DPS and big criticals. This talent tree is hard to use at lower levels and is most often played once players hit higher levels. Although you're able to do great damage, there are several negatives to this spec that need to be taken into account. You'll require a bunch of soul shards, you will go through mana really fast, and playing solo is often very tough. Though on the flip side, it is really fun.
