There has been a surprisingly long history of videogames being made into feature films for the big screen. Some have been tremendous successes, while others have left fans of the original game disappointed. Activision Blizzard's blockbuster wartime videogame series Call of Duty has outgrossed many movies on its own even before being made into one. With that in mind, could a future Call of Duty movie be a hit?
Some of the most memorable and successful videogame movies in history include Mortal Kombat, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and Resident Evil. Mortal Kombat grossed over $122 million in its adaption from an essentially plot-less videogame. Tomb Raider turned a profit of just under $160 million with their action thriller starring the stunning Angelina Jolie.
With these successes, however, comes a long line of failed attempts to bring videogames to the big screen. Some argue that the interactive nature of videogames does not translate well to a passive movie-watching experience.
Current videogames have since taken cinematic quality to a new level. The most recent example is Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops, which features the voices of known actors to bring the animation to life. The Call of Duty series has consistently grown its audience year over year. The last two games saw record multi-million dollar day one sales.
With an immense following of hardcore gamers and such retail success, some believe it is only a matter of time until Activision's CEO Bobby Kotickpushes for a movie to be made. Kotick is well known for his keen business sense and rare ability to produce staggering profits for his videogame company. In 20 years, he has brought Activision from a state of insolvency to the market leader.
Bobby Kotick has long stated that he believes videogames are a form of mass-market entertainment along with television and film. But whether or not we will see Call of Duty on the big screen remains to be seen. It may not be a bad idea considering the series' huge following and marketplace success.
