Developers of Bungie.net Join Activision and CEO Bobby Kotick

By Tricia Ward

It was recently announced that Halo developer Bungie inked a 10-year contract with the videogame production company Activision Blizzard. The announcement of a deal with Activision came as a surprise to industry analysts, but Bungie composer Marty O'Donnell voiced his excitement to work with Activision and their style of videogame production.

Bungie ultimately chose to ink the 10-year deal due to the Activision's ample resources and financial position to commit to such a long-term contract. While Activision's production process has been scrutinized over the years, O'Donnell of Bungie defended their approach.

"Not only were we excited about the contract that we were able to get with Activision but they seem really committed to being hands-off," said the Bungie composer. "They really seem committed to agreeing that they are the publishers and they need to support in all the ways publishers support."

A deal of this sort is nothing new to Activision, who is used to bringing on indie developers like Bungie. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick commented recently at a DICE conference about his commitment to provide the necessary resources to the creative and passionate minds that create videogames.

"It took us a lot of time to realize how important it is to have a company that is respectful of the independent cultures of the other companies they work with," said Kotick regarding what he learned through his merger with Vivendi Games and Blizzard Entertainment. "And not just respectful, but being oriented towards that culture of partnership, of being able to give the resources to, whether it's a studio or a company, and know when to stand back and let them run with those resources."

Activision Blizzard is the videogame publisher whose name can be seen on wildly successful titles like Call of Duty series and Guitar Hero. While it is too early to tell how this long-term deal will work out for both companies, it is safe to say that the industry will be keeping a keen eye on this partnership.
