Two Basic Reasons Why Your Xbox 360 Gets The 2 Red Light Error

By Don Sullivan

If you have an Xbox 360 that flashes the two red light error, get to the bottom of this problem quickly because you are facing a severe overheating problem.

Overheating should never be taken lightly. If you let this happen to often, your Xbox will become heat damaged and cease to function altogether. The red ring of death or three red light error can occur after repeated overheating. If you get the ring of death as a result of overheating, then damage has already occurred.

There are two broad reasons why your Xbox 360 is overheating:

1.) The console is being misused.

The consoles operating environment as well as your gaming habits will have to be changed. In order for its fans to properly function, the console must be placed in a well ventilated area.

Therefore it's very important to take notice of the area next to the fan vents. It should be dust and clutter free. By now it should be clear that an enclosure is the wrong place to keep your Xbox.

Take care that there are no sources of heat nearby. An example of this might be a hot stove or a heater. Some heat sources can be easily overlooked such as other electronics that are too close or direct sunlight. Keep the power supply on a hard surface. The cooling fans can't function properly unless the power supply is working properly.

Sometimes your Xbox will overheat simply because you've been using it too much. Shut it down for a few hours. You might also limit your gaming time to one or two hours.

2.) There is something wrong with the Xbox itself.

By this I mean that there's a part or component that's not functioning up to specs or isn't working at all. Make sure that you try out the preceding usage suggestions first before assuming that there is something that has to be fixed. You certainly don't want to spend time or money on repair that isn't needed.

Some hardware problems that cause overheating are:

A.) The cooling fans are weak.

Replace if this is the case.

B.) The thermal paste on the CPU or GPU has dried out.

The GPU and the CPU is connected to a heat sink with thermal paste. Thermal paste that is too dry will not conduct heat anymore which means that the heat sinks cannot cool the CPU or GPU.

C.) There is too much dust on the electronics inside the console.

Cleaning out internal dust is not a simple operation that anyone can do since it will mean opening up the console which requires great care. If you have a relatively new Xbox, then internal dust shouldn't be a problem.
