Technically, the error is known as the E-74 error. In regards to an estimation of the consoles that are having this problem, it has been gauged that nearly one third of them have become inoperable due to this problem.
So what can a normal user do in order to avoid this catastrophic end for his expensive console? As no one will love to see that the console they managed to buy very hard with their economies has gone down in smoke.
You can send it over to Microsoft if you want and they will send it back to you, ready to "eat up" a lot of your favorite games. But if the warranty has been exceed you will need to pa one hundred dollars and wait for a maximum of 8 weeks to be shipped back to you.
No one loves to wait a long time in order to have their consoles shipped back to them. So if you want to avoid the red ring of death, you will have to find a way in order to cool down your console so it doesn't overheat.
So, if you are someone that wants to buy a new console in order to play all of your favorite games, make sure that you will put the Xbox 360 in a place where there is not much heat, so it will not die on you too soon. You will be very happy you have done so.
