Game Design & 3 Tips To Help Students

By Robert Sutter

When it comes to the most prominent art forms in this day and age, attention has to be given to game design. It is important to note that gaming, as one of the greatest hobbies that people can get lost in, requires a tremendous amount of effort and designers are needed in order to carry out the effort in question. With this in mind, what should design students remember as they go about any given project? These are 3 tips that any student should keep in mind.

1. As a game designer, you have to make it a point to stand out. In my view, the video game market is one of the most diverse but the problem is that many developers like to look at what is trendy and work off of that. For example, even though series like Call of Duty and Super Mario are some of the most prominent, the truth of the matter is that emulating said series takes away the idea of creativity. In order to stand out, do not cast aside a creative concept you might have in mind.

2. It is important to understand that science is needed in order for this particular art to excel. Game design is meant to be a creative platform and I do not think that anyone can argue with such a point. With that said, science is needed as well since game design is done through computers. The understanding of such elements as coding is integral in order for games to be created. If such a level of understanding is not seen, games are ideas and nothing more.

3. Just like any other industry in the public eye, it is important to stay current with news in the gaming world. This is especially true when the video game business can seemingly change on a dime. As a result, it is important for you to understand not only the developments that can come about but how they can alter your efforts in the realm of gaming. If you are able to stay up-to-date with the news, I have no doubt that your career will benefit from it.

These points are just a few to keep in mind if you want to make the most out of game design. To say that there is a tremendous degree of work that is associated with game design perhaps goes without saying but I do not think that this should turn anyone away from this particular endeavor. In fact, I am of the opinion that most of these students have potential because they have a lifelong appreciation for gaming. In time, as long as they put in the work, students can excel in the gaming industry.

Cat Mario And How It Is Different From Super Mario

By Aniket Bansode

Super Mario Brothers has always been a game that many people loved ever since it came out along with the Nintendo console sometime during the nineties. Since this game was so popular among all age groups, there have been a lot of people who would make games similar to this as a tribute. One of the most popular of these online games is Cat Mario.

Now this is just one of the games that would emulate the Mario games but it is by far one of the most popular. Basically, one is a white feline creature who is standing up on two legs and jumping around over holes or on top of floating bricks. The game is in Japanese but the game play is quite self explanatory so it is not hard to play.

Now this is actually just like the Super Mario games when it comes to gameplay but it has its own twists to it as well. For example, the feline does not require mushrooms anymore to grow as it can already break the bricks at the beginning of the game. Also, instead of mushrooms that would come out from the coin blocks, enemies would come out instead.

Before he starts the game, he will be given three main lives or simply three credits. Each time he loses a life, he will have to start again at the very first level that he started in. Now if he would finish the first level, then he will simply move on to the next one.

Now the controls are pretty simple as all it takes would be four main keys. Now to move forward, one must push the right arrow key and then the left arrow key to move backward. In order to jump, he just has to make use of the up arrow key.

Just like in the original games, in order to kill the enemies, one would have to jump over them. Now also just like in the original games, monsters that would come out of pipes could not be killed. One of the differences between this and the original games is that the pipe monsters are not plants but ghost like creatures that would shoot to the sky.

Although this game has its similarities to the original, it has its own charm. Users will enjoy hearing the same Mario music that they hear in the original games. One would definitely have a nostalgic feel when he would play this game online.

Clementine's Story: The Next Phase Of The Walking Dead Telltale Game

By Mickey Jhonny

At last the waiting is done. All that vaguely obsessive compulsive analysis of the trailer need no longer suffice for the hungry fans. It seemed like it would never happen, but finally, the Walking Dead Telltale game, season 2, has arrived. Episode one is ready for our thrilled exploration. And you'll hear no discouraging words from this aficionado. It rocks.

The world of the Walking Dead has been great for a fan base totally taken with the prospect of interacting with the Robert Kirkman's zombie apocalypse. Elsewhere I've discussed the thriving domain of the Walking Dead fanfiction . Telltale's super game provides further opportunity for interacting with this desolate, creepy and fascinating world.

Fans of season one will certainly remember Clementine. She was kind of the object of the first season. The subject, if you will, the acting protagonist, Lee, was largely driven by his desire to protect her. However, as such fans will know, Lee is gone, and now Clementine has to fend for herself. Thus she has graduated to protagonist of season two. When we meet back up with her in season two, we already see how she has had to grow up, forced to make the hard decisions to survive the zombie apocalypse.

The extensively decorated game, with award wins and nominations coming out of the wazoo, in this first episode of its second season continues to show its excellence, continuing to breathe new life into the adventure game genre. Likewise it continues its winning strategy of avoiding the risk of lapsing into mere puzzle solving and emphasizes the dynamic of interactive story telling. And these aren't empty choices.

The results of character's choices resonate throughout the game. They lead to practical and often unexpected consequences. Not only do those consequences reverberate from episode to episode, but it appears choices from last season may yet affect options in this new season.

It's not all the same though. As great as season one was, there are notable improvements, especially on the technical end, in season two. The graphics are much better: richer and more detailed. And the frame rate seems more stable. Clementine is able to walk now much faster than in the past. That is kind of good when gripped in on-the-edge-of-your-seat suspense.

My one complaint was that too often I thought the dialogue choices were too extreme. Either Clementine had to be harsh or childish. That's the way I read it and I didn't think that kind of limitation gave either the character or the story the fullness from which it could have benefited. I'll be keeping an eye on that development going forward.

On the other hand, there is something intriguing to this dynamic, too. Playing a young girl, it turns out, allows for some unexpected options. This is quite different than playing Lee. Clementine doesn't hesitate to take advantage of her youthful, feminine coquettishness. This adds an intriguing dimension - particularly for those of us who haven't any experience actually being young girls!

And, I'm happy to report, that Telltales' strongest strong suit remains firmly in place here in the first episode of season two. I'm referring of course to the moral complexities confronting the protagonist. For instance, are you prepared to make Clementine a dead cold killer right from the get-go?

Lots of people already have. What are the consequences of that? Only future episodes will tell the tale. This is why the Walking Dead Telltale games have been so successful and so compelling. So far, the future looks bright. At least, from outside of the zombie apocalypse...and all that.

Demetrios Gabriel & 3 Games For Childhood Development

By Bob Oliver

Despite what your parents might have told you, video games can actually be good for you. It goes without saying that gaming is one of the best escapes for people to lose themselves in, whether it's done after a strenuous day of work or following a taxing exam at work. Whatever the case might be, Demetrios Gabriel can tell you that there are reasons why video games can not only help you keep stress to a minimum but actually benefit your brain as you become older.

In my view, there is no video game series with as many brain-teasing puzzles and riddles like the "Professor Layton" series for the Nintendo DS. Sometimes the puzzles will be straightforward enough, such as leading Layton along a path of logs that are traveling across water. Other times you'll have to utilize simple mathematics in order to tackle puzzles that are, in actuality, surprisingly obvious. If riddles are up your alley, start with the first game in the series, "Professor Layton and the Curious Village," and then go from there.

If you want to help your brain in the long run, maybe you would be better off looking at the past more so than anything else. This is where "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past," a personal favorite video game of mine, might come into play. There are various challenges that the brain will be tested by but they are at a manageable level, which is a vital point that Demetrios Gabriel can tell you about. There are also many ways to approach certain trials in the game, which authorities such as Gabriel Pediatrics can say only helps to further problem-solving skills.

If you ask me, "Portal" is amongst the most unique experiences in gaming and there are many reasons for this. For one, even though the game itself plays as a first-person shooter, it is actually more along the lines of a puzzle game. What this means is that you have to be able to understand how your gun works, as it creates portals that the player must travel between. Along with a clear understanding of how momentum can be used to one's advantage, "Portal" is undoubtedly unique.

Video games are broad, to say the least, and it's understandable that it can be difficult to find the best possible choices. For parents, you may benefit from conducting further research, as you will likely find other types of games that your child can play for the sake of better cognitive development. These are the types of video games that are most important, which I'm sure Demetrios Gabriel can agree with. These choices, in my view, are ones which I believe only scratch the surface.
